Behind the white lab coat

“As a child, I was very close to my grandmother,” says Shaveta Kotwal, M.D. “I loved spending time with her. I think, ultimately, that is what inspired me to study geriatric medicine.”

Since completing her geriatric fellowship at the University of Maryland at Baltimore in 2008, Kotwal has been practicing medicine at Ashby Ponds…and she couldn’t be happier.

“In an outpatient setting, I would have no idea about someone’s living arrangement or eating habits. Here at Ashby Ponds, I know all of those things, which provides a better understanding of people’s needs. And because I work where my patients live, they can just walk right down and talk with me. It makes communication so easy. I really appreciate how much interaction I have with the residents; as a result, I can provide better medical care.”

When not helping her patients, Kotwal can be found in her Ashburn, Va., home with her husband and ten-year-old son.

“I love spending time with my family,” she says. “At dinner, we all sit around the table telling each other about our day. And whenever possible, we take a walk together in the evening.”

She also enjoys cooking, gardening, going for drives with her husband and son, and home decorating.

Every few years, Kotwal plans a visit to see family in her native India. “My sister is a practicing ob-gyn there,” she says. “I guess that means a love of medicine runs in our family.”
