Carol Burnett and the best of sketch comedy

By Gerry Fey

After Betty White brought the house down hosting Saturday Night Live last month, there has been talk on Facebook and elsewhere about how great it would be to see Carol Burnett host SNL. I agree completely. I would LOVE to see Carol host. She was Saturday Night Live before it existed. The sketch comedy and sight gags on the Carol Burnett Show were funny to all age groups, and half the skits you’ve seen on SNL now or before are basically the same gags from her show. Her comedic style can still get laughs, because, as she says, “Funny is funny.”

I started thinking about some of the funnier skits from the Carol Burnett Show and compiled them into this list. The show ran from 1967–1978 and featured guest hosts from Cher to Ronald Reagan. We won’t see a show like this again—that’s for sure. Enjoy.

“Went With the Wind”

Carol always liked to spoof popular movies, so a classic like Gone With the Wind, was not safe from her brand of comedy. A few notes on this skit: Along with her usual cohorts Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, and Vicki Lawrence, she had Dina Shore in a guest role. Also the, shall we say unusual, dress Carol wears toward the end of the skit was an idea by now famous fashion designer Bob Mackie, who was the Carol Burnett Show’s costume designer for its entire 11-year run.

“Snow White: 15 Years Later”

And they lived happily ever after, or did they? According to this skit, life wasn’t all peaches and cream for Snow White and Prince Charming. Jack Gilford plays one of the seven dwarfs trying to bring her back to the fun in the forest.

Funny moments compilation

Here are just some funny moments from all the episodes of the Carol Burnett Show. There are a few repeats with “Went With the Wind” and “Snow White,” but it’s still worth checking out.

Carol Burnett audience questions

Following the show, Carol would come back on the stage to answer questions from the audience, and you were guaranteed to hear a question that would put Carol on the floor. Here are some of the best.

The finale of the Carol Burnett Show

From its original broadcast (March 29, 1978), here are the final minutes of “A Special Evening With Carol Burnett.” This was also the final episode of the Carol Burnett Show. Carol thanks the crew, talks about her decision to stop the show, and sings “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together” one last time.

Hope you enjoyed it! Now let’s see Carol host SNL next season!
