‘Sold in two days’
Team of experts was key, says Pennsylvania womanBy Jacqueline Kimball
Janice Houser’s move last year to Maris Grove, Erickson Living’s community in Delaware County, Pa., would have overwhelmed her if not for help from the community’s personal moving consultant, Suzanne McAllister.
When Janice joined Maris Grove’s priority list she secured her place in line for her dream apartment home based on her priority list date.
She also gained access to McAllister’s complimentary services, including referrals to preferred moving professionals such as senior move managers, real estate agents, and moving companies.
Janice used a preferred agent, antiques dealer, and moving company to simplify her move from a four-bedroom, four-bathroom house in an over-55 community in Chester County.
When her agent, who also lived in the over-55 community, said Janice’s house would sell quickly, Janice didn’t believe her. Considering the economy, she thought she’d have a year to organize, downsize, and move.
“So I went to Europe,” she says, “and my house sold in two days.”
Getting down to business
With only a month to downsize, Janice started second-guessing her decision to move and worried that her furniture wouldn’t fit into the one-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath apartment style she’d selected.
She called McAllister nearly every day, and was reassured each time.
“Suzy was never irritable and she always returned my calls,” Janice says. “She’d done her own downsizing and knew what it was like to move to a smaller place. But mainly, she was there for me; she’s there for all of us residents. That’s the most important thing; it shows she cares.”
McAllister even helped Janice move furniture to her son in North Carolina. She contacted a preferred vendor that moves 85% of Maris Grove residents, including Janice, and the company arranged the out-of-state delivery.
“I’m happy I came here instead of another community,” Janice says.
She belongs to an informal morning exercise group at the campus fitness center, is involved in a host of activities like memoir-writing, theater, and square dancing, and has made scores of friends.
Janice equally cherishes her Chester County friends. Her home’s open floor plan, which features a floor-to-ceiling bay window and a gourmet kitchen with wraparound granite counters, is ideal for entertaining them.
In fact, four of Janice’s friends now are interested in moving to Maris Grove.
