Lifelong learning goes local

Posted on Thursday, October 02, 2008

Tallgrass Creek will offer two classes this fall in partnership with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kansas.

“Exploring the World of the Gilbert & Sullivan Soprano: A Unique Type Among Ingénue Characters” will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, September 30 and October 7 in the Audubon Clubhouse at Tallgrass Creek. The operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan feature timeless social satire and British humor. The class will examine the phenomenon of Sir Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert and their famous collaboration. Each session will discuss selected plots and present both recorded and live performances.

“Catch the Light: Lanterns to Lasers” will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, October 29, November 5, and November 12 in the Audubon Clubhouse at Tallgrass Creek. This course explores the wonders of light across human history, from sun worship in ancient Egypt to the chemistry of a candle and the magic of fiber-optic cables. Using demonstrations and discussions, we will explore how our encounters with light shape our lives.

Osher classes are open to Tallgrass Creek residents as well as priority list and KU Osher members.

Registration is required. Please call 785-864-5823 or 877-404-5823 to register.
